Many of you probably already know the performance, but I just got the
Opera d'oro set of Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur from Naples 1959 with
Olivero, Simionato, Corelli, and Bastianini. The singers are all in
spectacular form, and the sound is fine. If you've been wondering
whether the set is worth acquiring, I can assure that it is-assuming
that you like the singers and the opera. Actually, it's hard for me to
imagine that there is a better performance out there of this opera. I
would be happy to hear others' opinions.

And the conductor, Mario Rossi, was one of the most under-rated
maestri of that era --- a very fine conductor --- and not just in
verismo. And back in those days an Italian theatre could actually
cast an Italian opera with 4 first-class Italian singers and an
Italian conductor. I believe that run of ADRIANA's in Naples was
supposed to have starred Renata Tebaldi, who cancelled (I think she
was ill). Olivero was called in as a last-minute replacement. In
light of all the greats from the 1950's and 1960's who have died in
the past few years, it's nice that both Olivero and Simionato are
still with us.

Mr Rossi was a pupil of Respighi and, at least in Europe, was a
prolific performer and recording artist in the days of LP not only in
opera but in the symphony and contemporary repertoire across a very
wide range of composers from Vivaldi to Dallapiccola via Dvorak.

Some similars are still out there but because of recording cutbacks we
may not today know of them.

Kind regards,
Alan M. Watkins

Not only was Olivero appearing before an audience that expected and adored
Tebaldi, she was recovering from surgery and was cinched tightly around the
abdomen. But she is very savvy and sang the end of "Io son 'lumille ancelle"
, drawing it out and coloring it seemingly forever, that the audience went
wild and from that point on the performance took on a white heat
excitement - one of the great nights of opera and fortunately we can hear it

And I think the Caballé/Carreras/Cossotto the cat's pyjamas, as we say in
England.

The frustrating thing is that it was apparently telecast, like the Tebaldi
Forza from Naples, or at least recorded on tape. THAT would be a video to
have, wouldn't it??? I don't know whether it's sitting somewhere, or was
taped over, but it would be an almost priceless souvenir or a great quartet.

Cilea, I assume you know, that Magda really was the right one for Adriana.
She retired in 40 or 41 to marry, and she'd just started singning Adriana,
and he said something like, "I find my perfect Adriana, and she goes and
gets married." When she resumed her career a decade later, it was largely at
the urging of the then mortally ill Cilea. She came back first with a couple
of performances of Mimi to test the voice, and then officially returned as
Lecouverer. It is to the eternal disgrace of the MET management at the time
that after making a spectacular debut as Tosca in 75, they offered her to
COVER the next season's performances of Adriana (and she was still singing
the role as late as about 1990). She declined. What we might have had here.
