I have just been listening to one of the first LP's I ever acquired,
excerpts from Samson and Delilah with Rise Stevens and Mario del Monaco
-on an RCA recording from 1959. It is a terrific recording, I think.
Does anyone else know it? I just hope that by 2009 somebody will
reissue it on CD, or whatever the standard format is by then. I also
have the CD of Stokowski conducting similar excerpts, with Stevens,
Peerce, and Merrill, and as much as I admire Merrill and Peerce, del
Monaco blows the competition away, I think.

It was reissued a few years ago in Japan as part of the RCA Red Seal
Vintage Collection (BVCC-37351). I'm not sure if it is still in
print.
I agree with you that del Monaco is wonderful on this recording. I
certainly count it among his finest commercial discs.
Best,
Ken

The Stevens/Peerce/Merrill Samson and Delilah highlights recording was
one of my first LP's. Somebody gave it to me when I graduated from
High School. I nearly wore it out. I need to get it out of storage
and listen to it again.

Hopefully, Sirius will re-broadcast the 1954(?) performance from the Met -
quite exciting, IIRC.

I'd love it to be reissued on CD, the sooner, the better; though a
highlights album, the material is both extensive and well-chosen -
'all the work's gems' are present!

Best,
LT
