Post subject: Best cities for opera composers?

It used to be that Vienna, Naples, Paris, etc. were THE places to be if you were an opera composer. I live in Maine, USA right now, possibly one of the least opera-friendly places on Earth.

What city or cities are there now where a composer might find a warm reception for his art?

Favorite composers of not just opera (some wrote operas) - ....Well... The following are my 10 personal adored composers...when it comes to concerti, symphonies, tone poems,etc......Some wrote operas..but i collect them also for other things: Beethoven R.Strauss Elgar Rachmaninoff Tchaikowsky Gershwin Mahler..

Favorite composers who wrote other material and those who .. - I. Did a lot of both R.Strauss Tchaikowsky II. Should have done more opera Beethoven Rachmaninoff Gershwin III Never wrote operas and should have Mahler Sibelius Elgar

Works better suited to loony cities - Lulu Death in Venice The RING Billy Budd Damnation of Faust Harvey Milk Gypsy Hair Hansel and Gretel (oh..you think they were just gathering strawberries???) In fact...are there ANY operas or musicals of any value in those areas????? Remember, Suor..

Composers who DEMAND more "Homework" - ...Not that ALL composers do not merit careful scrutiny..but i cannot listen to a mahler symphony or the RING the way i might listen to a Tchikowsky Tone Poem or a Mozart Piano Concerto..I therefore feel thast I MUST read more about Mahler and Wagner..
