Post subject: more celebrity opera directors!

Forgive me if this has already been posted, but it seems that Woody
Allen will direct Gianni Schicci in LA, according to Opera News
online:

Domingo, Los Angeles Opera's general director, has made the
recruitment of eminent Hollywood directors a notable facet of his
tenure at the West Coast company, and said that his courting of Allen
for the opera stage "takes the prize of the longest pursuit," having
begun some four years ago. Other film directors conscripted onto the
opera stage by Domingo have included John Schlesinger, who directed
Tales of Hoffmann; Garry Marshall, who staged the company's production
of La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein this past season; and David
Cronenberg, whose staging of Howard Shore's The Fly will have its
world premiere on September 7, 2008.

"I have no idea what I am doing," said Allen, when asked about staging
Schicchi, "but incompetence has never prevented me from plunging in
with enthusiasm."

Considering the artistic atrocities L.A. Opera has already
perpetrated via erstwhile film, TV and "wannabe" stage
directors, Woody Allen might be an improvement! ;-) (And
"Schicchi" was at least INTENDED as a farce.)

We saw the Friedkin Gianni Schicci in Los Angeles a few years ago
and it was quite good, but I am still sceptical about Wood Allen.
Some
of his output has been off the wall.

rudolf bing hired tyrone guthrie, margaret webster, jean-louis barrault,
garson kanin, alfred lunt, cyril ritchard, among others, from the
legitimate theater. some were wonderful, some were terrible. nikod
psacharapoulos directed at city opera with an lp libretto as his guide.
why one should be apprehensive about woody allen hardly rises to a
worrisome level. his film direction has always suited the material,
though those films were always to his own scripts. the comedy of
schicchi seems to me well suited to his theatrical sense of humor.
his take on the naked greed of the florentine plotters seems a nice
parallel to the schemers he has often found in his native new york. i
hope he leaves the setting in the original time and place. allen has
never found it necessary to explain and make "relevant" his works.
let's pray that he doesn't fall prey to gothamtrash.

If the particular production does not work I think the music will
survive.

Kind regards,

No doubt; but
fortunately, Allen's direction is likely to work out well; contrary to
the pessimism of some, the man's a genius, as his films -with and
without his appearing in them- have been masterpieces.

Glad to see he's turning his vast talents and attentions to the World
of Opera.

Perhaps it's about time he did so.

Did you see the L.A. "Capuletti" and Trovatore" in the
1990's? (Talk about "off the wall"!) Although nothing
quite equals the4 "Pelleas" of a few years prior to those,
featuring a heavily pregnant Melisande!

At the Washington National Opera, Domingo hired William Friedkin
(remember the Excorcist?) to direct Gianni Schicci to good reviews.

*Fifteen* minutes?

I personally find the 7.5-minute 'Rienzi' Overture (plus a couple
hours' fasting) inspiring enough to "invade" several Lower-Manhattan
Polish restaurants, along 1st and 2nd Avenues. Their various
specialties are always worth the while!

After which Charles T. La Perv Bollmann, aka Stinky 'ljo', through
duly translated gibberish, uttered:

> My DEAR LOVEGOD MR. TILLMAN, THANKS A ZILLIONE FOR this welcome and
relevant segue from opera into your delicious, >nutritious,
stylishious diet, Sir!!!

Down, Stinky! I like adulation as much as the next Lovegod, but let's
take it easy, eh?

>We slugs are as interested in what goes into you as what comes >out of you. We are honored to masticate the latter, particularly.

While you may say you're honored, Stinky - you're not.... -in Operatic
terms- Goodunoff for it. Got it, Git?

> Aieee, the floculence of us boll-clones!!! We must devour our own >wastes!!! Heh heh heh!

In your case, that's Cannibalism, no?

Though he tends to make very light of it in his dialogue [ "I can't listen
to Wagner. After fifteen minutes I have this iresistible urge to invade
Poland" ] the fact is Allen's actual films belie his nonchalance on the
subject of - for want of a better term - "art music". He's directed 38
films, and at least two-thirds of them feature the imaginative, evocative
and appropriate use of the likes of Bach [ "Hannah and her Sisters" ],
Mendelssohn [ "A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy" ], Verdi [ "Match Point",
which concerns the opera-going English well-to-do ], Schubert [ "Crimes and
Misdemeanours" ], Gershwin [ "Manhattan" ], and frequent uses of Mozart and
Beethoven, all determined by him. The man may be more readily identified
with trad jazz, but he is plainly very musical.

I should have thought Schicchi would be in considerably safer hands under
him in L.A. than it was here last month under Richard Jones....

How in the world do you justify this segue from opera into your revolting
diet. We are no more interested in what goes into you than what comes out of
you.
