It’s performed for the first time on 14th January in 1900 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. This amazing production became worldwide since its first performance. At first the critics didn’t like the Tosca play and was later called "shabby little shocker" by one musicologist Joseph Kerman. But in 2008 Tosca took up an eight position on Opera America’s 2008 list of the 20 most-produced operas in North America.

Actually Puccini had composed another 4 operas before starting with “Tosca” in 1895. His first two operas Le villi and Edgar, Manon Lescaut were poor receptions. The character of his third opera La Bohème was full with Romantic sentimentality and after its performance he decided to make something different. That’s why in Tosca, Puccini used the dark side of human emotion.
