....as of July 1, poor old Carmen and chums have been made redundant.
Michele in Il Tabarro will have to have a bubble pipe instead.

Any other operas that will be badly hit or have to be remodelled, or
indeed forced into extinction because of this ban?

C of W.
(who once met a man by the name of Henry Winterman who was so fed up
of being called Old Smoky Gob he changed his name... to Peter
Stuyvesant!)

I suspect Susanna will breath more easily as she breaths less easily
in secret

And who, pray, has ever seen Wolf-Ferrari's little one-act charmer on stage
here ? It would make a good foil for the more knockabout Schicchi.

SJT, who seems to have read that Westminster's Health and Safety officers
have already descended upon the Theatre Royal, Haymarket insisting that
David Suchet's cardinal not puff on stage in "The Last Confession" ( this,
in a house not forty yards from where last week's car-bomb was dumped. There
could have been a lot more than just David Suchet smoking in that theatre,
even now, much the dismal Tory scum jobsworths of Westminster would care ).

The new ban strangely does not expressly ban smoking onstage. The rules state that you must justify every act of smoking onstage artistically. You have to fill in a form stating the reasons why.

So Carmen and her gang can puff away to their hearts content safe in the knowledge they are being artistic!
