I specifically mentioned Ortica because his Met perf.were
absolutely horrendous..At the end of the Celeste Aida..we heard one
clap(his mommy??)
He RUINED the Tebaldi Chenier..cracking on the top notes in the
usually glorious last duet..I never booed.....but came close..by all
of us yelling "Bravo Gigli..Bravo Pertile...etc.)
The big difference between the tenors (or other voice categories)
from my era and today's eras is that we had GREATNESS and
HORROR....Totall yextreme:

We did have Tucker,Corelli,DelMonaco,Bergonzi,Gedda,valletti..etc.

BUT we had Nuotio,Nikoloff,Parly,Zambruno,Piso,Feiersinger,Gari,Baum,
and other teniors who made our lives miserable..since they
appeared in operas with GOOD PEOPLE...so we suffered very often.

Today..it is much better in general..despite the lack of a Tucker or a
Corellli..but it is wonderful not to have to suffer the way we
did....CH

I think it's true, going back even to the 70s (1970s) when I started, that
there was a lot more variability. There were performances that would NEVER
got on stage now, and singers who wouldn't, and there were, I think, maybe
more of the spectaclar performances.

I think that's because now the MET is turning out a 'product' - it doesn't
have to be inspired but it has to be 'consistent'. You see that in other art
forms as well - it's not limited to opera - at some point you really go into
a mass-production mode, and that takes away the highs and the lows. The way
the MET has done this is by relying more and more on production 'values'
rather than individual singers to carry the evenings.
