| I always thought Jaime Aragall was among the world class tenors. Yet, I
have never seen his name appear on this newsgroup either for against. Any
comments?

I don't think it's true that he has not been discussed here. I just
put his name into a search of this group and got 319 hits.
I think Aragall had a beautiful voice. In his prime, I think it
rivaled Carreras for sheer beauty. I saw him once, in Esclarmonde at
the Met with Joan Sutherland. He sang beautifully.

You're right. In fact, donpaolo started a thread on Aragall a mere eight
days ago (7/21). Thank you donpaolo.

There is more to being world class than just the voice although it is an
important part (maybe the most important).
I never cared much for Aragall though, his recordings fail to move me.

Whatever the man's talents, whatever his vocal accomplishments - and they
were considerable - the sad fact is that Aragall was, and for all I know
remains, a festering heap of resentment and ill-will, bitterly jealous of
one major colleague he regards as having usurped his career, cantankerous in
the extreme, and prone to literally paralysing bouts of stage-fright to
boot. This is not a good recipe for a carefree, long-lived career, believe
me.

Yes, at his best, he was really something to hear. It's a shame he
didn't record a lot more. The recording studio might have been a good
haven from the stage fright problems he suffered. And he did make some
fabulous recordings. That first recital disc London issued is superb.

================================================================
I knew Aragall quite well starting in the mid 70's, meeting him at a
party in San Francisco where the other guests included Luciano
Pavarotti and Jose Carreras. These three all got along famously, and it
was a treat for me to be with these 3 tenors.
I must say that SJT's evaluation of Aragall above, though perhaps a bit
harsh, is absolutely true.
I hadn't seen him since perhaps the mid 80's, when I went to Barcelona
in 1997 for Millo's first Tosca ever. Sure enough, Aragall was the
Cavaradossi. I was shocked that he remembered me, both by name, as as
"the guy with all the tapes." He was very friendly, and did a good job
as Cavaradossi that night. He still seemed very nervous.
Whenever Jose Carreras was asked, in the 70's and 80's, who he thought
had the most beautiful tenor voice of the day, his answer was Jaime
Aragall, and I know he meant it.
Too bad about Aragall. He had a fine career, but it could have been so
much more without all the mitigating circumstances.
Best

<Aragall was..a festering heap of resentment and ill-will, bitterly

etc.
You seem *so* intimately informed, it's really inexplicable that you
didn't reveal who the rival is.

Hell - let's have a sort of pool/guessing game:
I'd hazard a guess it was NOT: Alfredo Kraus, Jose Carreras, Luis Lima,
Luciano Pavarotti, Franco Bonisolli, Nicola Martinucci, Pedro LaVirgin,
Vasile Moldoveanu, Gianfranco Cecchele, Franco Tagliavini, Mario Malagnini,
Ermanno Mauro, Giorgio Merighi, Ludivic Spiess, Giuseppe Giacomini, Carlo
Bini, Bruno Beccario, William Mateuzzi, Giorgio Casellato-Lamberti....Then,
WHO was this assassino; this vergognato??? Hmmmmm...the mind boggles with
the possibilities....

I'll never forget his first note of 'Amor ti vieta' I heard on tape.

Of course, you know, as we all know, that to mention his name in
anything but a very comlimentary, positive context is a big no-no here
on RMO. I think I was chastised for doing just that about a month ago!!
Now my lips are sealed forever. (Well, almost forever!!)

You didn't say anything, Ed. As I recall, it was an anonymous female
voice from cyberspace who spoke about Domingo! (;-)

I'm very glad you qualified that. It will serve you well in the

While we're on the subject, I just bought Domingo's new Neapolitan
Songs album from DGG ("Italia, ti amo"). I think it's surprisingly
good. He's in very fine voice, and does a lot more vocal and textual
shading than I would have expected. A very worthy effort, IMO.
