I think that now and forever there will be a very very few
singers, participants in a certain repertory, who will NEVER EVER be
equalled..and who probably have never been equalled, even before the
dawn of recordings...Maybe not...but here are a few:

Caruso
Melchior
Nilsson
Flagstad
Ponselle

that's about it.......CH

I realize that my offering is not what you were looking for, Charlie, but
just consider the stage-savvy & the experience of our beloved &
taken-for-granted comprimario singers such as: Andrea Velis, Alessio Di
Paolis, Charles Anthony, Thelma Votipka, et. al. While not super-voices,
their stage presence & familiarity with the action, as well as the music,
serve to calm a jittery star.

As to voices, some, like Charles Anthony, actually have/had
sound-quality above some "star" voices in their ranges.

A couple of questions:

Who are Opera's most celebrated comprimario tenors - in addition to the
ones above, along with Paul Franke, Michel Senechal, and Piero di Palma?

Was it Di Paolis who befriended and effectively went to bat for the
young Theodor Uppman, when some director wanted to fire the latter?
