Post subject: Forza 1956, for the zillionth time!

How often could you hear your FOUR favorite singers in their
respective voice categories sing an opera TOGETHER?????
Such was the 1956 Forza I attended and just played for the nth
time...and it as if it was just yesterday to hear the glory of Zinka
Milanov, Richard Tucker, Leonard warren, and Cesare Siepi ( If the
Preziosilla would have been Shirley Verrett,Fedora Barbieri, or Regina
Resnik..then all would be complete!!).
I re-played Zinka's "Maledizione' only three times this
time.....Zinka had that way of starting a top note mezzo- forte and
swelling to fortissimo...and it drove us all nutsy!!!! Her greatest
role!!!
Anyone who claims that Richard Tucker lacked a legato line..just
play the section beginning" No, d'un imene il vincolo" in the restored
"Sleale" duet. HIS greatest role....and then the sound of Leonard
Warren....last time I heard him do the role complete, since only 4
years later, he died upon the Met stage in the same role...and the
velvet Siepi tone.....just ravishing!!
To be sure I go to the Met and love it..but I do know that the
likes of these four, especially together in Verdi, will not come our
way again....we have waited about 50 years...NOPE...It is not going to
happen....
Nice to experience the same thrills I once did live...after
another 50 years!!!!!
as ever Charlie
