Post subject: Computer organizing cds = xpost
Archived from groups: rec>music>opera (more info?)

I am starting to catalogue my cds from the internet, which I've kept as hard
copy files only. I want to be able to search in a very limited number of
categories, which are as follows

Composer Work Individual Artists Conductor Orchestra Year
Performed File #

These are the ONLY categories I need. I want to be able to search in any of
the categories, and in "Individual Artists" for any one of a number of
artists who might be listed. The File # column will just be for my reference
only, and won't need to be searchable.

I will not need any other information. At some point in the future I might
conceivably want to put my commercial cds and lps into some kind of file
system, but in reality I don't think it will ever have to be more
complicated than this.

I don't like entering a lot of data, have a big backlog, and need this to be
simple.

Does anyone have any recommendations? It occured to me EXCEL might be the
simplest way to do it, but I am not sure about the "Invidual Artists"
category, since there would usually be half a dozen names in such category
for each performance, and I want to be able to find, say, all "Schwarzkopfs'
in all the cds in the index with a single inquiry.

Any ideas will be appreciated, but it all has to be simple.

Thanks

Try Musicmatch Jukebox. When you put in a disc, it automatically
searches the web for the details. You can organize playlists according
to artist, composer, etc.

If you don't download a program of some sort, your best bet is Access
(or other database program) and then Excel. Excel is easy to use. But
once you start getting large amounts of data, it becomes easier to use
Access. If you don't have Access, you can still use excel. The beauty
of the two is that you can always import the data if you get Access at
a later time.
