Beverly Tribute

Very often it takes the passing of a famous celebrity to remind
us of their contribution to our lives;such was the feeling I got this
evening when PBS replayed the Sills documentary(available on DVD if
you did not know). When an entire body of work such as that of
Ms.Sills is summarized in a tribute program and you view all their
many contributions, it can be astounding, especially in the case of
someone who had a career that began at such an early age. (Rinso
White???).
With all the opera excerpts played, the interviews, the
comedy scenes,etc..what got to me most this evening was her singing
of
"All the things you are." Here you could experience the depth of
emotion, the sincerity, the beauty of her delivery of the song, and
of
course such was so in the many opera roles she essayed. As the
program
went on to her many interviews, the sight of a daughter who never
heard her voice, her coaching with the late Roland Gagnon (his
untimely passing saddened her so much), the remarkable variety of
roles, the hilarity with Carol Burnette, Danny Kaye, and Lily Tomlin,
the visit to the realm of the Muppets,and so on.....you grasped the
enormity of her career and I guess we might say in tribute, "Boy,she
had a good run!"
If anyone missed this program, I do heartily recommend
you purchase the DVD, and although you will feel the sadness at her
passing, your heart will nevertheless be filled with great joy at
what
she did give to the public for so many years.

I did not realize Mark is a Sills hater..he changes the title of my
most affectionate post.....I wonder if any "active" members here will
protest that if a person writes on OPERA...they should be respected..CH
